Defining Culture
Da City & Culture Show EP 1
Cold Open: 0-2 mins
What does it really mean to live in a city?
Not just to exist in it but to be shaped by it.
To wake up every day in a place where the streets, the people, the environment quietly influence who you are, how you think, and even how you connect with others.
Intro Monologue: 5 mins
Today, we’re talking about culture but not just culture in the way we usually think about it. Not just food, festivals, or art. We’re talking about culture as something deeper. Something embedded in everyday life. The unspoken rules. The social rhythms. The feeling you get walking through a neighbourhood, or trying to build a life somewhere new.
And there’s no better place to explore this than Vancouver.
Vancouver is often seen as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You’ve got the ocean on one side, mountains on the other, and a skyline that feels almost cinematic. But beyond the surface, it’s also one of the most complex cities to live in.
It’s incredibly diverse people from all over the world, bringing different languages, traditions, and ways of life. That diversity creates opportunity. It creates richness. But it also raises questions.
How do people find belonging in a place where everyone comes from somewhere else?
How do you build community in a city that can sometimes feel distant?
And how does the environment itself the rain, the nature, the pace shape how people interact, socialize, and experience everyday life?
Because living in Vancouver isn’t just about where you are it’s about how the city lives in you.
For some, it’s a place of freedom. Access to nature, space to breathe, a slower, more mindful lifestyle.
For others, it can feel isolating. A city where it’s hard to break into social circles. Where the cost of living changes how people connect, where they live, and even how they spend their time.
So today, we’re diving into all of that.
We’re exploring the personal experiences of living in Vancouver what it feels like to try to belong, to build relationships, to create a sense of identity in a city that’s constantly evolving.
We’ll also talk about the environment not just the natural beauty, but how it influences behaviour. Does being surrounded by nature make people more connected… or more inward?
And then there’s the social structure. The way people meet. The way communities form or don’t. The subtle cultural norms that shape how open, how distant, or how connected people feel.
Because culture isn’t something you just observe it’s something you live through.
And whether you realize it or not, it’s shaping your experience every single day.
So as you listen to this conversation, I want you to think about your own experience in this city.
What does it feel like to live here?
Does you bring people together or would you rather create distance?
Does it make connection easy… or something you have to work for?
And how much of who you are today is influenced by the place you call home?
Today’s guest brings a unique perspective on all of this someone who has experienced Vancouver in a real, personal way, and has thought deeply about what it means to live here.
So let’s get into it.
